Sangita Verma

Sangita Verma is a Dehradun-based visual artist whose path into art grew out of a life in teaching. "A teacher's journey represents lifelong commitment to learning," she writes. "My expedition as an artist commenced with the same thought." Her work, she says, "represents a positive outlook towards life, innovative and enthusiastic just like my teaching experiences" — creativity, in her words, being "intelligence having fun with colors, clay, mud & mirrors."

That love of tactile material comes alive in her Lippan work, the traditional mud-and-mirror craft of western India rendered in acrylics. Enchanting peacock and Whispering window are built up on mud and MDF board, while Auspicious Ganesha, Vibrant blue, Royal palace and Exclusively trendy set acrylic against mud and inlaid mirror. These are pieces that catch and scatter the light as you move past them, turning a traditional folk technique into something that feels warm and contemporary on a modern wall.
